Interpretation of epidurograms may be difficult for those lacking experience, and most radiologists consider the epidural space to be outside their domain. This book will enable individual operators to explain the failure of a block, whether it is due to a misplaced or malfunctioning catheter, or an anatomical abnormality such as a septum or bony deformity.
Complications such as subarachnoid, subdural or high epidural block produce characteristic appearances which are described. The results usually correleate well with the clinical history and may serve both the physician and patient in establishing sources of pain and stress, see website URL.
For Mothers To Be
More and more women are unwilling to suffer severe pain in childbirth and are demanding effective pain relief throughout labour. This usually requires an epidural or similar injection in the back. These are very safe procedures, but just mentioning the word "epidural" is enough to upset and alarm many women. Such concern is unjustified as serious complications are extremely rare.
The aim of this book is to describe the latest devlopments in epidurals and other similar techniques in some detail, but in a light-hearted way, stressing the safety of the procedures and their benefits to the mother and baby, while not ignoring the occasional problems. It is hoped that expectant mothers will be able to look forward to their childbirth with confidence, knowing that they can choose effective and safe pain releif if they want it.
